The Essure Procedure

Pap smear results

Your Pap smear results say ASC-H. What does it mean?

Technically, it means "atypical squamous cells; cannot exclude high-grade intraepithelial lesion." This means that there are some cells that are not normal and may be worrisome that if left untreated, and may become cancer. For this reason, it is very important that you follow the recommendations of your gynecologist. In this situation, a colposcopy and biopsy will be performed. A colposcope magnifies the cervix and allows the gynecologist to take a very close look at the outside of the cervix. If there are any abnormal-appearing areas, a biopsy, which is usually relatively painless, is taken. The results of this biopsy will determine if further treatment is necessary.
