Advanced hysteroscopy
A surgeon trained in advanced hysteroscopy has the skills to perform surgical procedures inside of the uterus. These procedures often use an instrument called a resectoscope.
Advanced hysteroscopy allows the surgeon to do more than "just look in the uterus" as defined by diagnostic hysteroscopy. A surgeon trained in advanced hysteroscopy has the skills necessary to perform surgical procedures in the uterus while viewing a TV monitor.
Some of these procedures include:
- Removal of fibroids inside the uterus
- Endometrial ablations (for non-cancerous uterine bleeding unresponsive to medications)
- Treatment of scar tissue (such as from a previous D&C)
- Treatment of a uterine septum (may be the cause of repeat miscarriages)
In certain circumstances where a hysterectomy has been recommended, an advanced hysteroscopy procedure may offer a welcome alternative to the hysterectomy (i.e. removal of fibroids, endometrial ablations). |
