ASC-US
Pap smear results
Your Pap smear results say ASC-US. What does it mean?
Technically, it means "atypical squamous cells - undetermined significance." In laymen's terms it means that the cervical cells appear abnormal, but the cytotechnologist isn't sure what is causing them to appear that way. One reason may be certain vaginal infections. Once treated, the Pap smear may return to normal. Trauma and childbirth can also make cervical cells appear abnormal. With an ASC-US result, the Pap smear may be repeated in 4 to 6 months or HPV testing may be performed. Your healthcare provider will select the option that is best for you. Overall, most of these Pap smears turn out to be nothing to worry about, but it is very important to continue to follow-up as recommended.
