Lisa M. Roberts, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Lisa M. Roberts, M.D., is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (F.A.C.O.G.), and president and CEO of Gynecology & Laparoscopic Surgeons, PC, in Raleigh, N.C. Dr. Roberts is a specialist in advanced laparoscopy and advanced hysteroscopy techniques.
Advanced hysteroscopy allows the surgeon to perform surgical procedures in the uterus, such as the removal of fibroids, while viewing a TV monitor. Advanced laparoscopy differs from open surgery in that the surgeon performs the procedure through a very small incision. Patients experience a faster recovery, shorter hospital stay and less postoperative pain with laparoscopic surgery when compared to conventional open surgery. The advent of minimally invasive techniques - the performance of surgery in many cases without open incisions - is one of the greatest innovations in surgery, and Dr. Roberts is a surgeon on the vanguard of medical practice.
Typical laparoscopic procedures performed by Dr. Roberts include hysterectomies (removal of uterus and cervix), removal of large fibroids or ovarian cysts, paravaginal suspension (pelvic relaxation or prolapse) and bladder neck suspensions (for stress urinary incontinence). Hysteroscopy procedures include removal of large fibroids (from inside the uterus), endometrial ablations (for non-cancerous abnormal bleeding unresponsive to medical therapy), treatment of uterine abnormalities (septa and scar tissue) and polyps.
Dr. Roberts received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and completed her OB/GYN residency at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She credits her professional advancement to two crucially influential fellowships. First Dr. Roberts completed an advanced gynecologic endoscopic surgery fellowship under Dr. Joseph Sanfilippo at Allegheny General Hospital and Magee-Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.
After residency, Dr. Roberts completed a fellowship in advanced gynecologic endoscopic (laparoscopy and hysteroscopy) surgery under the direction of Dr. Harry Reich, a pioneer in the field of laparoscopic surgery who has performed many firsts, including the world’s first reported laparoscopic hysterectomy. Dr. Reich is internationally renowned for developing advanced laparoscopic techniques and for his many publications, presentations, textbooks and research.
The author of numerous articles in peer-review journals, Dr. Roberts has also been an ad-hoc reviewer of the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology since 2004 and the Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology since 2000. Together with Dr. Reich, she has authored portions of two textbooks: A Practical Manual of Laparoscopy: A Clinical Cookbook, New York: Parthenon Publishing, 2002; and Practical Manual of Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Gynecology, New York: Parthenon Publishing, 2006. Dr. Roberts has also authored a chapter with Dr. Sanfilippo in Danforth’s Obstetrics and Gynecology, Philadelphia: Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2003; and a chapter with Dr. Krisztina Bajzak in the Atlas of Laparoscopic & Hysteroscopic Techniques for Gynecologists, Taylor & Francis Group, 2007.
In 2005 Dr. Roberts received the 40 Under 40 Leadership Award from the Triangle Business Journal. This award honors the brightest, most promising young business people in the Triangle under the age of 40. Like the other top performers who have won this award, Dr. Roberts has attained significant leadership in her chosen profession and also has had substantial involvement in community service. She is a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, and is a sought-after speaker and presenter who often addresses topics in women’s health, such as hormone replacement therapy, at local and national conferences and events. Dr. Roberts is presenter for the popular Speaking of Women’s Health (SWH), a nonprofit foundation whose goal is “Saving Lives Through Education.” SWH educates women through educational conferences, television programming, newsletters, community outreach and books.
Dr. Roberts is an active medical professional who often serves as faculty for various professional workshops, and she frequently lectures at post-graduate courses. She maintains membership in AAGL (formerly the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists), serving on the AAGL board of trustees from 2003 through 2005. Dr. Roberts is also a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Medical Association (AMA), the North Carolina Medical Society and the Wake County Medical Society. |
