Sexually Transmitted Diseases - STDs

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) affect both men and women. Exposure may result from sexual contact of the genitals, mouth, or rectum with an infected person. Infection is more likely if there is more than one sex partner and if condoms are not used.
The most common STDs are:

• Chlamydia
• Gonorrhea
• Genital herpes
• Genital warts or human papillomavirus (HPV)
• Syphilis
• Trichomoniasis
• Hepatitis B
• Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Most STDs can be cured. Some can be treated, but not cured. STDs can cause a pelvic infection in women resulting in adhesions (scar formation), especially of the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes may become blocked or damaged, resulting in infertility (inability to become pregnant) or ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside the uterus which is potentially life-threatening). It is important to see your physician early if you feel that you may have been exposed to an STD.
