A uterine septum is a congenital anomaly of the uterus. A septum is a thick bridge of tissue that partially or completely divides the uterine cavity in half. A uterine septum is usually asymptomatic until a woman experiences repeated pregnancy loss and the septum is identified on a hysterosalpingogram. A hysterosalpingogram is an x-ray study often performed as part of the evaluation for repeat pregnancy loss. Treatment of a uterine septum is removal of the septum using advanced hysteroscopy. Term pregnancy rates after removal of the septum are often greater than 70%.
